What Is a Breathable Fabric?

two service men discussing

Work uniforms should help you work your best with breathable fabric.

You might have seen many advertisements for work uniforms, athleticwear, and everyday clothes alike that are “breathable.” Some of these items might also be called “moisture-wicking.” What is a breathable fabric, and why is it important for your company’s work uniforms?

What Is a Breathable Fabric?

A breathable fabric is a fabric with ventilation. It lets air pass through it. This kind of fabric works better when it is more fitted to the body than not, allowing moisture to evaporate faster. Without breathability in the fabric, the clothing can trap sweat and make the wearer feel clammy. If it is summer, it can make one feel unbearably hot and moist; if it is winter, the trapped sweat can turn cold and make a person feel colder.

Breathable fabric does away with both of these issues. What makes a piece of cloth like this is its weave, weight, and fit. The weave must allow enough tiny holes to allow for airflow. Thinner, lighter fabrics also aid in breathability.

What Industries Need Breathable Fabrics for Uniforms?

Wearing breathable fabric is important when you are doing physically demanding tasks. If not, an insulating, non-breathable fabric will help you keep warm in winter, while loose fabric will help you stay cool in summer. Breathable clothing is advantageous for workers who physically move a lot, like plumbers, electricians, construction workers, and warehouse workers, among many other professionals. It helps regulate your temperature whether you are indoors or outdoors.

Sedentary employees can also benefit from breathable fabric. It ultimately helps with regulating your temperature control so that when you sweat, the moisture will evaporate properly and keep you cool and comfortable. Office workers, front desk receptionists, and hospitality workers can also look and feel their best with breathable fabrics.

Are Breathable Fabrics Moisture-Wicking?

Breathable fabrics can be moisture-wicking, but not all are. Moisture-wicking fabrics use capillary motion to draw moisture to the garment’s exterior, letting it evaporate faster and keeping the fabric itself drier. Moisture-wicking fabrics have water-resistant fibers. Cotton and rayon are breathable, but they absorb moisture and so are not moisture-wicking.
